Club Ride, Wednesday 6/19: Borrego/ Bear Wallow – Borrego Trailhead

This week we’ll head a little further up the mountain for some cooler temps. Easy ride on the Borrego/ Bear Wallow loop (approx 4 miles and 700′ climbing), with the option for some additional miles up the Winsor for those feeling extra motivated!

Join us for a Santa Fe Fat Tire SOCIETY SOCIAL on Thursday, August 8th from 5:30-7:30 PM at Violet Crown!

The Society Social is a drop-in, casual club meet-up event and social hour. It’s open to all – members, future members, and children & families welcome – to provide an opportunity to meet other members & bike-minded Santa Feans. Bring the whole family and grab dinner or a snack, and enjoy your favorite beer or NA beverage.

The first 40 SFFTS members to visit the info table will receive FREE CLUB MERCH and a FREE SMALL POPCORN courtesy of our hosts Violet Crown.

Follow the new trail approx 2 miles to the worksite. 
 
After the trail build, we’ll get take out from the Eldorado Fusion Tacos and a beer at the SF Brewing tasting room, courtesy of SFFTS.

We have been notified that Hyde Park Road is closed below Borrego/ Bear Wallow, and will be moving this week’s ride to Glorieta Camps. We’ll try out the proposed loop we missed last week. Thank you to everyone who alerted us to the road conditions.

Proposed Ride: Green loop, Snack Pack, Holy Mole, green loop, jump line if it’s dry. Multiple routes/ groups possible, if there is interest.



 
Be sure to bring lights in case we go long and need a few extra minutes to make it back to the trailhead.

Club Ride, Wednesday 10/02: Dale Ball – Sierra del Norte Trailhead


Proposed route: 1,2,3,4,5,10,11, luge south, (stopping a lot to get jump and rock roll photos), Cerro Gordo and then back up the east side. Short cuts available for slower riders and/or shorter distances

Description: Join NMVFO and the Santa Fe Fat Tire Society as we collaborate on a one-day project to improve the tread of the two-mile long Juan Trail (#399) in the Santa Fe National Forest. The Juan Trail has been damaged by years of use. We will reshape the trail tread to improve drainage, fill in entrenched areas, and remove rocks that are obstructing traffic using pick/mattocks and McLeod hoes. We will also do some light lopping and limbing to cut back brush and tree limbs that are encroaching onto the trail. All tools will be provided.

The Juan Trail can be reached from the Little Tesuque Trailhead at Coordinates 35.72597, -105.88721. Since parking is limited at this Trailhead, we will meet at the Sierra del Norte Trailhead at Coordinates 35.71094, -105.89943 at 8:00 am then carpool 1.8 miles to the  Little Tesuque Trailhead.

US Forest Service rules require all volunteers to wear boots, long pants, long sleeves, hard hats (provided), work gloves, and eye protection (sunglasses okay) while working. Please bring a daypack to carry your lunch, snacks, sunblock, rain gear, and a full-day’s supply of water.

Reminder: Pets are not allowed on NMVFO projects.

 Club Ride, Wednesday 10/09: Galisteo Basin Preserve – Cowboy Shack Trailhead

Join us for another Santa Fe Fat Tire SOCIETY SOCIAL on Thursday, October 10th from 5:30-7:30 PM at Violet Crown!

The Society Social is a drop-in, casual club meet-up event and social hour. It’s open to all – members, future members, and children & families welcome – to provide an opportunity to meet other members & bike-minded Santa Feans. Bring the whole family and grab dinner or a snack, and enjoy your favorite beer or NA beverage.

October’s Social will feature guest speakers Northern New Mexico Horsemen’s Association who are doing a special event with SFFTS on Saturday, October 12th at Galisteo Basin Preserve – you will learn how a horse might think about a bike on a trail, how to approach horses and riders, and what are the roles and responsibilities of both types of riders. Come hear from NNMHA at the 10/10 Social and then RSVP here for the event with actual horses at GBP 10/12!

The first 40 SFFTS members to visit the info table will receive FREE CLUB MERCH and a FREE SMALL POPCORN courtesy of our hosts Violet Crown.

Horseback riders and mountain bicyclists share our beautiful New Mexico trail systems. Have you ever met up with horses on the trails? Were you unsure how to safely proceed? Let’s talk about how we can do so – you will learn how a horse might think about a bike on a trail, how to approach horses and riders, and what are the roles and responsibilities of both types of riders. 


We will create an opportunity to interface with horses, observe how a horse can react to a bicycle, or any real or perceived fear. What do some horses find scary? You can pet a horse, and feed them a treat. The objective is to have a hands on and safe learning experience. Bring your bike and be ready to learn!

Club Ride, Wednesday 10/23: Arroyo Hondo Trails – Meet at FR79 Lower Parking Area


This week we will ride some of our great National Forest trails in the Arroyo Hondo Trails system (https://www.trailforks.com/region/arroyo–hondo-usfs).
There are a lot of great ride options for all ride levels. If you have not been here before, this will be a good way to sample some of the trails with people who know their way around. If you have been here before, you know how good the ride options are.



It’s getting dark earlier now, so be sure to bring lights to get back to the lot. If you’ve never ridden at night  before, and would like to try, reach out and we may be able to find a light for you.



Meet at the FR79 Lower Parking Area at 5:45; wheels in the dirt by 6:00.


Park at the Forest Road 79 Lower Parking area (location here). A few hundred yards after you take the left fork in the road and cross the 3rd cattle guard and are on USFS land.


The third cattle guard is 1.3 miles after you hit dirt, and the meeting/parking location is 1.5 miles after you start onto the dirt road. The road gets wider and there is space to park on both sides of the road.


Leave plenty of time to get there. It takes about 40 minutes to drive to the meeting spot from the Siler Area. Remember to drive courteously through the Cañada de los Alamos community.

GBP Trailwork this Sunday, Oct. 27th, to work on the last 3/4 miles of the new trail. The remaining trail will be mostly ridden in but also needs some bench cutting, packing, raking rocks off the trail route and brush clearing. Be at the Cottonwood trailhead at 9am for a 9:15am departure to ride to the worksite. We’ll ride the new trail to the starting point for the remaining work and exit out the end of the trail where Brent’s Bon Temps meets Jax’s Jaunt (jct 74). Additional details on the Sign up form and RSVP to get a breakfast burrito. There will be cold drinks at the end of the workday.
