Spring is heating up and so are our trailwork volunteer opportunities! This is one of the great ways to get involved and contribute to the Santa Fe community – by building and maintaining our local trails with SFFTS! Check out the weekly volunteer work opportunities to build new trail at Galisteo Basin Preserve on Thursdays, along with this week’s rides.
Remember to always Ride, Build, and Maintain Sanctioned Trails! Santa Fe Fat Tire Society (SFFTS) is opposed to any unsanctioned/illegal trail maintenance or construction. SFFTS works with land managers (e.g. Santa Fe city, USFS, BLM, Commonweal Conservancy/GBP) to build new trails and maintain existing trails. Building unsanctioned trails is detrimental to our access, damages the reputation of the mountain bike community, and can jeopardize the success of ongoing projects.
If you believe there aren’t enough trails or variety near you, it’s time to get involved! Your engagement will be welcomed because it takes a village to create, enhance, and protect great places to ride.
Our current trail projects and opportunities to get involved include:
Galisteo Basin Preserve: Currently working on new 3.5 mile loop west of Jax’s Jaunt. Volunteer opportunities Thursday evenings until the trail is completed.
USFS Arroyo Hondo: Finished phase 1 building 6.5 miles of new trails. Currently working with USFS to obtain permission to begin phase 2 which will include 20+ miles of new trails.
La Tierra Trails: Currently working with city of Santa Fe to obtain permission to reroute some eroded trails.
General Maintenance:
- Collaborating with Santa Fe Conservation Trust on maintenance of various city trails (La Tierra, Dale Ball, etc.). To find out more contact Tim Rogers (tim@sfct.org).
- USFS Winsor zone: Trail maintenance and sawyers clearing trees (certified with USFS to operate chainsaws in national forest).
