Environmental Statement

The Santa Fe Fat Tire Society’s dedication to building a strong mountain bike community goes hand in hand with our commitment to environmental sustainability, trail stewardship, and community well-being

In the rush of our daily lives it can be difficult to pause, take a deep breath, and appreciate the wonderful place where we live. Here in Santa Fe we are fortunate to have access to a variety of beautiful places, from the waving grasses of Galisteo Basin to the alpine forests of the Sangre de Cristos, there’s a mix of trails for everyone to enjoy.

While SFFTS is first and foremost a mountain bike and trail advocacy organization, we care deeply about the Santa Fe community as a whole; we recognize that without a healthy environment, none of us would be able to enjoy these incredible surroundings, whether it’s on wheels, feet or hooves.

Our organization continues to grow as we enter our 15th year of existence. Most recently we’ve formalized our values as stewards for the land by creating an environmental statement for the club. Please take a moment to read the statement below and feel free to email me at president@sffts.org with any thoughts or feedback.

The Santa Fe Fat Tire Society’s dedication to building a strong mountain bike community goes hand in hand with our commitment to environmental sustainability, trail stewardship, and community well-being:

  • We encourage the community to enjoy its trails in order to deepen a connection to nature and to foster continued care of our outdoor resources.
  • We advance positive trail etiquette that respects multiple users and concentrates recreation on-trail to support soil health and prevent erosion in sensitive ecosystems.
  • We practice modern sustainable trail building techniques that improve public access to our lands while minimizing environmental impact; we also build structural trail improvements like bridges to protect critical habitat, such as for the Rio Grande trout.
  • We follow national standards (NEPA) and local requirements for trail-building projects that require hydrology, biology and archeology assessments, alongside community engagement, to ensure projects align with environmental goals.
  • We advocate alongside partner organizations to protect the unique landscape of northern New Mexico, such as the expansion of Wilderness area, and the responsible stewardship of public lands, including bike-accessible trails.

The Santa Fe Fat Tire Society is invested in a thriving Santa Fe and the world class trail system that elevates The City Different.
